1955 VESPA GS VS1 (BM-234) … SOLD
We have found our share of rare scooters over the years... but this one takes the cake. A Vespa GS VS1. The very first in a long line of wonderful sporting scooters from Piaggio. The one that started it all. These were produced for only one year. These are instantly recognizable because they were the only GS that used external control cables, as on the Faro Basso scooters. After the VS1, Piaggio changed the design to move the cables internal to the headset.
The numbers made were relatively few. As these were sporting scooters, most were ridden hard and eventually used up. Needless to say, very few have survived the sixty long years since they left Piaggio’s Pontadera factory. These scooters are almost impossible to find in Europe. They were never sold officially in the US, as Piaggio had not yet set up for sales in North America in 1955. There can be no more than a handful of these in the US, and we’ve never seen one here at all. Needless to say, this is a scooter to satisfy the most obsessive collector. A scooter that will complete a collection of the rarest scooters.
We found this scooter in Italy, and it is in nice condition overall. While not at “concourse” standard, it still looks great. We’ve never seen another for sale in the US, and we think we are unlikely to be fortunate enough to find another one of these. Get it while you can!
