1952 Laverda 75 “Tarantina” Replica (D265)
A faithful replica of one of the early successful Laverda racing bikes, this is a remarkable motorcycle. The original was a factory racer ridden by Nino Castellani to victory in the MI-TA long distance race in 1952. Popularly known as “Tarantina”, the racer remained the property of Laverda at the end of the 1952 racing season. Castellani was also the owner of a Laverda dealership in Riva del Garda and built this replica as an exact copy of his race bike. While the appearance is a virtual clone of the original Laverda 75, the mechanical components have been modified and improved utilizing parts from later models such as the Laverda 100. Near concours in all regards, the bike also runs and rides superbly and is notably quicker than a stock 75 Sport.
Francesco Laverda began designing an innovative light motorcycle or Motoleggera in 1947 to fill the need for motorized transport in post war Italy. Prototype development and design for production continued through 1950 and in 1951 the first bikes were offered for sale to the public. Eager to demonstrate the quality and advanced engineering of the Motoleggera, Laverda went racing. With a 75cc 4 stroke engine producing 3 HP carried in a pressed steel spine frame equipped with a blade-type girder fork and swinging arm rear suspension, the Laverda 75 was one of the most advanced machines in its class. The Motoleggera weighed 72kg (158lb) and had a top speed of 70km/h (44mph). The success of modified versions in various competitions and endurance races quickly developed a respected reputation and marketplace success.
