MODEL HISTORY: One of the most innovative designs from the mind of Carlo Guzzi, the Galletto (cockerel in Italian) was introduced in 1950 at the Geneva Motor Show and became an instant sensation. The design anticipated the modern large wheel scooter by over 50 years and offered the comfort and weather protection of a scooter in concert with the handling and style of a motorcycle. Coming to market at just the right time when riders were looking to move up to more comfort and performance from the basic machines that appeared post- war, the Galletto was a sales success. Over 15 years of production over 70,000 units were sold. The clever engineering features numerous advanced features and unique designs including the engine layout, cantilever crankshaft, gearbox, single sided swingarm and suspension, as well as the strong and very light monocoque chassis. Over the 16 year production life the Galletto saw many design upgrades and improvements. The 1959 series benefitted from many of these and retained much of the original style which made the model very popular. The 192 cc engine and 4-speed gearbox were very significant improvements, as was the later electrical systems and components. Later models offered revised styling which lacked some of the charm of the earlier design. Expensive to produce and challenged by more modern machines, production ceased in 1966. The Galletto was the last scooter-style machine built by Moto Guzzi and is considered one of their most significant models.
