1975 VESPA RALLY 200 (BM400) Custom SIDECAR (BM398)
The Vespa Rally replaced the Super Sport as the top of the line model in the late 1960’s and is regarded as one of the best ever Vespa models offering classic style and modern performance.
The Rally was updated in 1972 to 200cc and fitted with electronic ignition. On offer is a 1975 European market model found in northern Italy that features the larger headlight and various details unique to that edition. This one is in remarkable condition, fully restored mechanically and cosmetically five years ago in Italy and largely stored carefully since. This excellent unit forms the basis for our custom bespoke sidecar rig.
The sidecar is a true piece of machine art fabricated by a craftsman in central Italy. A bespoke creation of a true artist, this custom sidecar was designed and built specifically for this application and combination with a Vespa Rally. The all metal construction includes the sidecar frame, suspended cabin with upholstered seat, hand rail and luggage rack, all built to a fine standard. Elegant lines and exceptional finish are displayed proudly on this truly special creation. The Vespa and the sidecar, including all frame elements have been finished in a rare and attractive dark metallic grey shade.
With the Rally, the Vespa reached an excellent balance of classic style with modern performance.
It is particularly well suited to sidecar applications due to the power and torque of the 200cc motor.
With the Rally, VEspa featured a rotary valve powered motor. Versions of this motor had been used on the lower sized motors of the Vespa line since 1959, and had proven themselves robust and very reliable. The rotary valve induction allowed the oil mixture to be lowered from 5% on the SS, to 2% on the Rally a significant improvement.
On the road, this Rally / Sidecar combo is fun to drive, within the modest performance envelope. It has a smooth and powerful 200cc motor with more than enough power to suit, solid frame, comfortable cabin and decent brakes.
