HISTORY OF THE LUI 50
While the 1960’s were certainly swinging, the Italian economy was sluggish and Innocenti decided to launch a clever and chic small scooter at a very competitive price.
Design was handled by innovative automobile designer, Nuccio Bertone. Bertone produced a truly avant-garde scooter with youthful lines and very fresh styling.
Named the “Lui’ for the Italian market the daring shape and reasonable pricing made for a very positive model launch. Innocenti backed the new scoot with a broad and attention getting advertising campaign.
The lovable Lui 50 was offered in two versions. The CL was the deluxe version and was available in orange, turquoise, or "apple green." The more basic C model offered simpler trim and details and was available in white or "ocean blue." A 75cc version was also produced for export markets.
The radical design concept put all the mechanicals on view. A simple frame with a tubular front section and sheet metal rear held the exposed engine and components. Cast alloy wheels added a modern accent. The CL model featured futuristic cast alloy handle bars.
Cute as it was and clever as could be the “Lui” simply never sold in the numbers expected and Innocenti produced the model for only 15 months. The public was just not ready for such a forward looking machine. In the end just 27,000 Lui’s hit the road.
