1957 Moto Guzzi Zigolo (D278)
A classic Moto Guzzi runabout designed in the early 1950’s showcasing artful design and advanced engineering. Introduced in 1953, the Zigolo was Guzzi’s first partially-enclosed motorcycle. A successful design that remained in production for over a decade. It was designed to be cheap transportation for the masses and it featured a 98cc two-stroke engine and 3-speed gearbox. Said motor produced about 4 horsepower, enough to get the 170 pound scoot up to almost 50 miles per hour. Designed as an economical runabout, it returned over 100 mpg and was noted for dependability.
On offer a very original and complete restoration of this historically significant model. Italian racing red paintwork in excellent condition. Looks, rides and runs very well.
Period correct details include, Moto Guzzi decals, Aguila spring saddle, package rack and original Italian plates. Many fascinating mechanical points including Zigolo chrome muffler and rear friction dampers.
Like the best of the Italian lightweights of the early 1950s, the 98cc Zigolo was more modern and capable than any of its British contemporaries, being reliable, comfortable and offering capable roadholding and stable handling.
A rare, special forward thinking design and a charming icon of Italy’s post war recovery. Simple, elegant and a unique addition to any mid-century collection.
