1955 Gilera 150 Sport (D299)
One of the most popular Italian lightweight motorcycles from the mid-1950s this very clean 1955 Gilera 150 Sport comes to us from a private collection in northern Italy. The bike was treated to a full restoration a few years ago and ridden occasionally thereafter. A very sharp bike that shows very well. Many unique details and an iconic style. Classic Gilera features include the Gilera fender badge, slightly raised handlebars, solo sprung saddle and original Italian license plate. Exceptional paint finish shows lustrous black on the fenders and frame and a rich Italian red for the fuel tank. All details are correct and this is a pristine example of a true classic.
Bike has been in storage for a while and will need basic service and new tires before it is ready to ride. Truly artful style and detail, and a very good reputation for reliable mechanicals are are winning combination. A great addition to any Italian vintage moto collection.
GILERA 150 BRIEF HSTORY
As post war Italy rebuilt itself in the late 1940’s, lightweight motorcycles were very popular transportation much in demand. Gilera saw the need for an economical but sporty model with a 4-stroke motor and appointed talented engineer Piero Remor to design a suitable machine. The Gilera 125 was introduced in 1949 and was an instant success in the marketplace. Later Italian regulations allowed motorcycles of 150cc access to the motorways and Gilera upsized the 125 to 150cc to take advantage of the new rules. Introduced in 1952 the Gilera 150 was offered on Turismo and Sport trim and proved very successful. With minor variations the Gilera 150 remained in production until 1960 and over 96,000 units were produced.
