1947 Moto Guzzi Astorino (D279)

A superb example of one of the rarest Moto Guzzi models, this 1947 Astorino is truly a work of industrial art. One of the most intriguing motorcycles ever built. The combination of form follows function design details, luscious red paintwork, ample chrome and alloy makes a dramatic visual statement. We discovered this rare machine in a noted collection in the Venice area where it had been stored for many years. This unit has been faithfully restored in all regards and presents superbly, almost as new. The largely original and period correct restoration by marque specialist Giorgio Zambon has resulted in a true showpiece displaying remarkable craftsmanship and restoration expertise. Many unique details for this one year only model, which was replaced by the return of the Airone name.

The Astorino was a postwar redesign on the original Airone introduced in 1939 whose production was interrupted by the onset of WWII after only 1,000 machines had been built. Production of the Airone resumed in 1946 and the Astorino followed in 1947. Featuring many advanced engineering details including upside down telescoping forks and twin hydraulic rear shocks the Astorino was state of the art in the day. The Astorino is noted for a smooth ride and steady handling. The classic 247cc horizontal single with the eye catching meat slicer external flywheel developed around 10 HP and was noted for lively performance, a top speed over 65 mph and dependable operation. This Astorino features fully enclosed valve gear which debuted in 1947, replacing the exposed hairpin valve train of earlier models. It is unknown if this particular motor is original to this bike.

The restoration included polished alloy rims, refitted alloy brakes and rebuilt suspension units, including the unique “Upside Down” telescopic forks, which appeared first for Moto Guzzi with the 1947 model Astorino. The composite pressed steel and tubular frame has been meticulously refinished. The 247cc engine has been rebuilt and the clutch and transmission restored as required. The bike starts readily, idles smoothly - thanks to the entertaining external flywheel - and runs cleanly at all speeds. Performance was a strong positive for the model back in the day and the Astorino can cruise comfortably at 55 mph. Despite the “antique” styling, both roadholding and braking are of a high order for the period and this is a very enjoyable vintage bike to ride.

Cosmetics are first rate in all regards, featuring a stunning chrome paneled tank, good chrome on all controls and components, new seats and all fine points well detailed, as can be seen in the photos. Fresh from the comprehensive restoration this classic needs nothing and is fully ready to show and ride with pride.

One of the most “iconic” motorcycles ever built, the Astorino and the Airone on which it was based has a long pedigree and was the basis for many successful racing machines from Moto Guzzi who won the 250cc world championship several times in the early 1950’s

Replaced in the Guzzi lineup for 1948 by the return of the Airone, which went back to friction dampers for the rear suspension. With various detail upgrades over the years the Airone 250 proved very popular and production continued until 1957.

A near perfect example of one of the most historic and unique models ever produced by Moto Guzzi.

This time machine has a clean California title and registration, ready to enjoy.
