1939 BSA Gold Star M24 (D311)

Exceptional collectable, stunning restoration of very early series BSA Gold Star. The Gold Star legend began with the 1938 introduction of the JM24 model only 266 of which were produced. For 1939 there were many significant upgrades for the KM24 model, of which only 298 were built before production shut down due to preparations for World War II. On offer is a faithfully redone, matching numbers 1939 example restored in England by a BSA specialist a few years ago. Very original and complete, comes with a Gold Star Owner’s Club certificate. Overall condition is notable and the bike presents in near Concours condition. The bike has been preserved as part of a private collection until recently imported into the US.
Paint work, alloy finish and all details correct and exceptional. Unique features of the 1939 model include a redesigned fuel tank with an instrument panel, including a Lucas light switch and removable inspection lamp, an amp gauge and and an oil pressure gauge. For ’39 the toolbox was now frame mounted on the right-hand side of the machine.
This historic icon is in running condition. It is an authentic registered competition model. The 496cc motor is fitted with an Amal carburettor which delivers 30 HP and is backed with a 4 speed close ratio racing gearbox in an aluminum case. The frame is constructed of Reynolds 531 high-tensile tubing. Front suspension is via a BSA single spring girder fork and the rear is rigid. Handling is notably excellent for the period and the Gold Star series has an outstanding competition record over many years.
MODEL HISTORY
In 1937, racer Wal Handley managed an average speed of 102.27 MPH on Britain’s Brooklands circuit aboard a highly modified 500cc single-cylinder BSA M23 Empire Star. To recognize that significant turn of speed, Handley and the company were handed a Gold Star medal by the British Motorcycle Racing Club. Putting its marketing skills to use, BSA named its new sports machine equipped with an all-alloy engine the “Gold Star”. The first year for the now widely acclaimed model was 1938, thus making the 1939 M24 Gold Star offered here a fairly early example in the Gold Star lineage. It’s a stunning classic with a racing pedigree, many fascinating details, a girder fork, rigid rear end, and it’s remarkably rare.
